Sailboats are adaptive devices that balance the sailor between wind and water. Skillfully utilized, they act as first-order extensions of the sailor's senses and foster integration with the environment to achieve passage.
I've had the pleasure of learning from and working at a variety of non-profit sailing organizations, which has developed my capabilities for community outreach, theraputic and adaptive program development, fleet management, and fundraising. Nautical environments are trying, so I've done plenty of work repairing composites, rigging and splicing, welding, woodworking, and sewing. I have experience racing sailboats in fleet, team, and match formats, as well as thousands of miles travelled offshore for cruises, deliveries, and races. While not shy to compete, I'm more passionate about furthering underserved community access to the water through holistic maritime education.
Wet Pants Sailing Association
I learned to sail and then to teach on the choppy waters of the Great South Bay. Founded in a youthful spirit of playful antagonism towards yacht club culture, the low-budget and windy conditions at Wet Pants demanded tenacity. As a US Sailing level 3 coach, and NYS and US Powerboating instructor, I ran and coached at youth regattas in the New York area, as well as taught powerboating safety classes to novice instructors. During winters, I sailed with the frostbite fleet which has since become the Connetquot River Dinghy Club.
Oakcliff Sailing Center
Oyster Bay, NY
In 2017 I apprenticed in the Sapling Program at Oakcliff Training Center, rounding out my sailing education with enough miles sailed offshore to equal a cross-country road trip. Experiences ranged from passage-making on a hundred-year-old wooden boat to testing and tinkering with the latest in foiling technology. Intensive match racing honed my boathandling, tactics, and strategies, and as a nexus for international competition Oakcliff took my understanding of the sport to the next level.
Park City Sailing Association
Park City, UT
In 2022 I worked as the Director of Adult Education, Outreach, and Access for Sail PC in Utah's Jordanelle State Park. Managing a fleet of J/22 and Elliott 6M keelboats, rowboats, and powerboats, I had the pleasure of introducing many high desert-dwellers to participation in an aquatic environment. Collaborating with the National Ability Center, the Salt Lake City VA, and Warrior Sailing, I facilitated theraputic and adaptive programming. On my own time I hosted LGBTQ+ outreach events.
